Rolex Submariner 126610LN (Date)
The Rolex Submariner 126610LN, known as the Rolex Submariner Date or Black, is an instant classic.
With its elegant black dial and bezel, this 2020 model is close in appearance to its predecessor, the 11661LN, but does include some subtle changes.
This is in keeping with the established Rolex design ethos, which acknowledges the brand’s heritage even as it forges ahead into the 21st century.
Main Design Features of the Rolex 126610LN
The most immediately arresting design features of the Rolex Submariner Date are its black dial and bezel. These give it depth and distinctiveness. Scratch-resistant sapphire glass protects the dial.
There’s a cyclops lens embedded in the glass to magnify the date on the dial.
The hour markers on the dial are made of 18ct white gold which means they won’t tarnish.
The rotational black ceramic bezel matches the dial perfectly. It’s manufactured from Cerachrom. This state-of-the-art ceramic material, unique to Rolex timepieces, ensures that the bezel retains its flawless appearance.
Enclosing the timepiece is an Oystersteel case with a screw-down caseback and crown. As you’d expect, the Rolex Submariner black comes with a solid Oyster bracelet with Oysterlock clasp and adjustable Glidelock system.
As a diver’s watch, the Rolex 126610LN is waterproof to 300 metres or 1,0000 feet.
So far, these features are what you’d expect from Rolex’s impeccably high standards. But there are also some innovations worth noting.
Firstly, the Rolex has redesigned the case on the 126610LN. It’s larger, at 41mm compared to the 40mm of earlier models. But the lugs are more tapered and thinner in appearance.
The width of the Oyster bracelet has increased by a millimetre to make it sit more comfortably on your wrist.
What’s Going On Inside the Rolex Submariner Black?
The movement inside the Rolex Submariner 126610LN is the new generation 3235 calibre. This self-winding mechanical movement includes the patented Chronergy escapement.
This mechanism ensures the watch’s moving parts keep time and is extremely efficient. It’s made from nickel-phosphorus and is resistant to magnetic inference.
The 3235 movement has Superlative Chronometer certification. This guarantees its accuracy and reliability.
Essentially, the new movement features around 90% new parts.
It also has an impressively bigger power reserve of 70 hours, compared to the previous movement’s 48.
What Makes this Watch an Instant Classic?
When Rolex introduces innovations into its watch designs, they’re always part of a logical evolution in the brand’s development.
They don’t mark a break with the past but rather a continuation of the high-quality values in design and manufacturing that have characterised Rolex watches from the very start.
Therefore, when you buy a new Rolex, you’re investing in something that already has classic status.
The Rolex Submariner Date is still a Rolex Submariner, with all the history and authority the name suggests.
Origins of the Rolex Submariner
In 1954, Rolex launched the first Submariner at the Basel Watch Fair. This was one of the pioneering dive watches, designed for underwater use.
It was the first watch to be water-resistant to 100m and came with a rotating, 60-minute bezel to help divers keep track accurately of how long they’d been underwater.
The modern Submariner is water resistant to 300 metres.
The Rolex Submariner Date pays tribute to these early submariner models with its black dial and bezel.
As we’ve already highlighted, when Rolex does make changes to its designs, they’re subtle gradations rather than decisive breaks with the past.
This means anyone familiar with an earlier model of Submariner would immediately recognise its modern counterpart as part of the same design lineage.
Is a Rolex Submariner Date a Good Investment?
As a brand, Rolex has a certain aura. This immediately adds a value to its watches that isn’t simply down to their movements or materials.
This brand credibility and desirability ensures that many Rolex watches will not only retain their value but increase it.
Wearing a Rolex is a design statement that transcends momentary fashions or styles, providing a lifetime’s satisfaction and practical wearability.
The very fact that Rolex updates its Submariner models ensures their ongoing and increasing value.
When they bring out a new model, this doesn’t make older versions obsolete. Instead, it boosts their scarcity value and therefore their collectability.
The new watch you buy today can become your collectable investment for tomorrow.
